According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC. News) on October 15, a survey of young Australians found that about a quarter of young people have used illegal nicotine bags. The survey of nearly 1,600 people aged 16 to 39 found that 34% of respondents used nicotine bags because they liked their taste.
The results of the study were published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependenc and were conducted anonymously online from April to June 2024. 19% of the participants had used nicotine bags in the past 30 days.
Michelle Jongenelis, associate professor of behavioral psychology at the University of Melbourne and co-author of the report, said that as vapes have come under closer scrutiny, retailers have turned to selling other products.
The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) said that nicotine bags are strictly regulated in Australia and are not currently approved for sale.
Jongenelis stressed that the government needs to monitor the use of nicotine pouches in a national survey to understand their popularity. She suggested strengthening law enforcement rather than just legislative changes.
“The sale of these products is illegal, so we need better enforcement measures and ensure that enforcement covers all nicotine products that may be illegal.”
