New data from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH UK) found that more than half of UK ex-smokers who had quit in the past five years (equivalent to 2.7 million adults) used vapes in their last quit attempt.
In addition, it revealed that the main motivations for current smokers to vape included “smoking less”, “protecting others from the risk of second-hand smoke” or “helping them quit”.
ASH UK also reported that misconceptions about vapes are at an all-time high, with 50% of smokers incorrectly believing that vapes are equally or more harmful than smoking.
The new data also found that while current and former use of vapes by young people fell between 2023 and 2024, people under 18 are still using these age-restricted products.
John Dunne, director general of the British vape Industry Association, said in a statement: “The latest data from ASH in the UK once again highlights the smoking cessation qualifications of vapes for adults and reinforces the important role these products have and must continue to play in eliminating the health burden of smoking.
“That said, if vapes are to achieve their full potential in supporting smoke-free goals, action must be taken to address the growing misunderstandings about less harmful alternatives, which are undoubtedly exacerbated by panic stories in the mainstream media and some mixed messages in the public health field. This can be achieved through national public education campaigns that provide adults with the best, science-based information to help them quit smoking.
